Scores of families have voiced yet more concerns about plans by City College Norwich, this time about a proposal to dig bore holes at the site.

As previously reported by the Evening News, the future of a new diploma course at the college was left in jeopardy after plans to build a new home for the students were rejected.

The college had proposed to build a £1.6m facility on the site of what is known as the Thetford Building to house its new Construction and the Built Environment Diploma course which will begin in September.

Despite receiving more than 200 objections to the scheme city council planning officers had recommended it for approval but at a meeting at the end of July members of the planning committee went against this to vote five to four in favour of refusing planning permission.

However, the college has submitted a separate application to dig bore holes in the garden of the Thetford Building.

They will be used to assess drainage requirements for any new building.

But the application has further angered families opposed to the development plans and more than 170 letters of objection have been handed into to council bosses.

They claim drilling for the holes will cause environmental damage and that if the application is a success, it will give the college more scope to come back with a fresh bid for the diploma building.

Mark Mattles, of protest group CRC (College Redevelopment Concerns) and a nearby resident from Grove Walk, said: “We are concerned about the application for bore holes because it could lead to the destruction of trees at the college.

“Also if there is the go ahead for these it could subsequently make it easier for approval of another eco-building that would be totally out of character, which is not what people want.”

Another Grove Walk resident, Daniel Thrower, who is also a member of CRC, said: “There have been a number of letters of objection for many of the proposals by City College. I think it is time the college, as a conciliatory gesture of goodwill to residents and neighbours, offered extra trees and flowers in the garden to make the amenity just as suitable for tutors at the college.”
